Suzanne Heath is a ticket vendor for Luna Park in 1909 Coney Island. The Boardwalk is a garish, noisy place filled with bizarre shows, death-defying roller coasters, and wild and unusual shows. It is home to the tawdry, the grotesque, and the unusual. A reluctant psychic, Suzanne is helping the police locate a serial killer - all of whose victims have been found horribly mutilated. Suzanne's one true friend is Cittie Parker. Cittie is a young man who ran away from the colored Waifs' Asylum and now performs as a bloodthirsty Zulu drummer in Dreamland. As Suzanne's best friend, he fears for her safety. Cittie is right to be afraid. For Suzanne's investigation is leading straight to the gates of Hell.

Hell Gate is one of the most powerful horror novels I’ve read in a long time. It’s set in Coney Island more than 100 years ago and weaves in some really fascinating details about the place (it was both exciting and dangerous, fun and terrifying.) Reading Hell Gate made me feel I’d time traveled to that very location and was trapped there with everybody else. But it was the characters I liked the most. I really cared for Suzanne and Cittie, who both worked for Coney Island amusement parks. They came from such different backgrounds. She was a white woman from a privileged background. He was an orphan who had been raised in a home for abandoned black youth. But the two forged a friendship that faced fire and brimstone as they tried to solve the brutal murders in and around the parks. Anyone who liked the recent television show, The Alienist, should find Hell Gate to be right up their alley.Product details

Hell Gate (Audible Audio Edition) Elizabeth Massie Nick Santa Maria LLC Dreamscape Media Books Reviews
I've read two of Elizabeth Massie's previous novels ("Twisted Branch" and "Homeplace") and enjoyed them, but "Hell Gate" is a cut above, combining history with character, horror with atmosphere, and a twist I thought I saw coming - but didn't. Well researched historical detail with an intriguing lead character who I cared about. Highly recommended.
I have read quite a few of Massie's novels and enjoyed each of them Yes, it has horror. Yes, the scenarios and settings fit the time and place. Yes, the dialogue rings true. Yes, the descriptions are flowing and realistic. Yes, the characters are fully developed and interesting.
BUT, this one, Hell Gate, is different. This one is masterful. This one has a mind-blowing twist that you don't see coming (you may think you know, but you don't). This one is gripping. This one is gruesome. This one scares the hell out of you.
If you love horror, like being creeped out and enjoy true tension and suspense threaded throughout a book, you'll love Hell Gate. Just keep your lights on. Highly recommended.
Women in Horror Month Read #1. First time reading Elizabeth Massie, won't be the last. (Sineater, i now have my eye on you!) I am a sucker for history, for psychics, and for horror, so this one just rang all my bells. The icing on the cake was the stylistic flourishes in plot structure she took that made it clear this is a writer at the top of her game. Well worth my time.
Historical horror of such high quality is really hard to find. Elizabeth Massie's impeccable research, married to her gift to unsettle and frighten, has here produced a unique experience in terror. Highly recommended.
I've been a fan of Massie since she published the Stoker-winning "Sineater." That novel blew me away. Massie brings all of her prodigious talents to this latest effort, which will transport you back in time to the early 20th century. It's an immersive experience, along the lines of Caleb Carr's "The Alienist." You feel that you are accompanying the protagonists on their journey, in the detailed world Massie creates. I had no clue how the novel would end, and the finale was quite stunning. A fantastic read!
“Hell Gate” is an interesting mashup of many different horror tropes - murder, psychic abilities, a creepy amusement park setting, etc. - yet manages to create something entirely fresh and new. In the interest of preserving all the surprises, twists, and turns of the novel, I will only say this things are definitely not as they appear! About three quarters of the way in, I thought I had the mystery completely figured out and began to feel disappointed. I could not have been more wrong! The final “twist” left my jaw on the floor. As usual, Ms. Massie proves she is a master of mystery, suspense, and outright horror. “Hell Gate” is not to be missed!!
This is a period piece that takes place in New York and Coney Island. A young woman with paranormal abilities ends up aiding the police to track down and apprehend a killer. Carnival, murder mystery, paranormal, slice of history. Everything you hope to find in a thriller!
Add to those elements, characters you care for. Elizabeth Massie has done a masterful job creating characters you root for and love.
Recommended.
